Warwick Students Notch Up £11,000 in Literary Award Wins
Two students at the University of Warwick have won £11,000 worth of prize money for their literary talents.
Zoe Brigley, aged 22, who has just completed an MA in Women’s Studies and English Literature has won the prestigious Gregory Award, worth £5,000, for her poetry and Denzita Vlaeva, aged 21, who recently graduated with a First Class degree in English Literature and Creative Writing, fought off stiff competition from fellow student-writers from the Midlands to win the Audrey Pipe Foundation Award, worth £6,000.
Zoe Brigley won the Eric Gregory Award for Poetry for her submission of 30 poems that give a voice to women and those discriminated against. Donated by the Society of Authors, the Award gives promising up and coming writers help to establish themselves in the literary world.
After completing a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing and an MA at Warwick Zoe now plans to use the money to inspire her writing by travelling abroad.
Denzita Vlaeva won the Audrey Pipe Award, created to honour the memory of an aspiring novelist, for her portrayal of the relationship between the Soviet Union and Communism with the West in the mid 1960s. The process of selection is rigorous, involving two rounds of submission of short stories to narrow the field to those candidates who are lucky enough to be interviewed.
Denzita plans to use part of the money to travel to Russia and explore the country to inform her writing, and is now looking to establish herself in publishing.
