Following the christening of the first of its brand new 'Pioneer' trains, Hull Trains has named the second train in its fleet of brand new " Pioneer Trains" after University of Warwick Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart Palmer. The 'Professor Stuart Palmer' was named at a ceremony at Paragon Station in Hull on Tuesday, 12th July.

The train was named after Professor Palmer in honour of his time at Hull University where he was responsible for breakthroughs in the field of Ultrasound Bone Densitometry, through his work with his then student Dr Christian Langton. His work opened up the practise of Ultrasound for commercial use and is now used worldwide for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as osteoporosis and monitoring foetal development during pregnancy.

It is particularly fitting to note that the University of Warwick's Physics Department recently announced that it had developed a new ultrasonic based method to detect dangerous cracks in rail tracks.

Hull Trains' Managing Director, Mark Leving, commented: "The work of Professor Palmer had a huge impact on the world of medical science and the ongoing benefits of this are incalculable. Professor Palmer paved the way for revolutionary treatments for serious medical conditions to become widely available and it was his foresight and innovation that made this possible. This pioneering spirit made Professor Palmer an obvious choice for the name of our next Class 222 Pioneer train. "

Professor Palmer said: "It is a pleasure to be back in Hull. The service that Hull Trains offers opens up a world of business opportunities which can only improve the standing of the city."
