The National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY) will today - Tuesday 11th July - hand over their 100,000th membership certificate to David Goodman (15) of Handsworth Grammar School in Birmingham.
Already five times ahead of their 2006 target of 20,000 members. This is a key milestone for NAGTY who are now halfway towards identifying and enrolling the entire cohort of 11-18 year olds in the top 5% of the ability range in England.
NAGTY's membership has doubled in just over year. On 9th June 2005 Jacqui Smith, the then Minister of State for Schools and 14-19 Learners, took time out to meet Tolani Agboola, the 50,000th. Just a year before that on 14th July 2004 that NAGTY celebrated its 30,000th member School boy Roderick Eneh, from Canning Town in London.
The increasing profile of gifted and talented education has certainly put NAGTY on schools agendas and students are now rushing to sign up for membership, so much so that extra evening shifts have had to be introduced to allow the organisation to process all the enrolment forms!
Early feedback on membership already shows the positive impact of membership on students with over 70% of students feeling that membership had made a positive impact on their lives and 85% saying it had raised their self-esteem, aspiration and motivation to learn.
With the obvious benefits of membership to England's gifted and talented cohort, NAGTY are now keen to recruit the estimated full cohort of 200,000 eligible students as quickly as possible to ensure that all gifted and talented students in England can benefit from the range of opportunities available through membership.
Director of NAGTY, Professor Deborah Eyre said:
"We are delighted that the government is to make available the data that will help schools to identify their top 5%. We look forward to welcoming them to NAGTY."

David Goodwin is 15 years old and attends Handsworth Grammar School in Birmingham. He has just finished an AS in Archaeology (outside of school) and would like to be a marine archaeologist when he grows up. He enjoys History and Geography at school and plays rugby, kayaks, does martial arts and scuba dives!
The National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth was set up by government, at the University of Warwick, to improve provision for gifted and talented children and young people up to the age of 19 years, and to provide guidance, advice and development for teachers. It is the centre of expertise for gifted education in England.
