110,000 Gifted kids recycle their mobile phones to support disadvantaged students
Young people are among the quickest to change
their mobiles for the latest model but thanks to new scheme the
next time they upgrade their phones they have an opportunity to
help gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students at
Woodway Park School in Coventry are among the first to join the
scheme in which thousands of students across England to will raise
money, every time they change their mobile phones, for education
opportunities for gifted students from disadvantaged
backgrounds.
All 110,000 members of The National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY), are recycling their old unwanted mobile phones to raise money for the Goal programme, which provides mentoring, support and events for gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Each phone recycled by Greener Solutions will provide £3.50 towards the Goal fund which sponsors students over a four year period. Not only that, but the students are helping the environment too!
Phillip Dilley (16) from Woodway Park School said: "I think it's a great idea, lots of people are always getting new phones just throw their old ones away - it's good that by recycling them instead of dumping them other kids like me will get to go on events and get a chance to improve their education."
Rebecca French (13) said: "Give a phone to NAGTY for Christmas! It's that time of year when people get new phones and this is a great way to be good to the environment and help other students."
So far The National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth has raised over £3,000 from recyling phones, this money will in turn be match funded by the Government who have pledged up to £1million in match funding for the Goal project. Director of NAGTY, Professor Deborah Eyre said: "This is just one small way in which we are trying to raise funds to help gifted students from disadvantaged backgrounds across England access mentoring, education opportunities and career support. So far we've had a terrific response from our members to the recycling drive and now we're hoping that news of this project will spread further and people will turn in their old phones to help us raise more! Not only will they be helping disadvantaged students gain access to a really inspirational programme, but they will also be doing their bit for the environment too."
