New research project examines rights of suspects in police custody across Europe

A new €330,000 research project examining how the rights of suspects in police custody vary across Europe has been launched at the University of Warwick.

Professor Jackie Hodgson from the University of Warwick's Law department is heading up the French portion of the study, which will run for two years and is funded by the EU Commission.

Professor Hodgson is working with partners from the University of Maastricht, University of West of England, Justice, the Open Society Justice Initiative and Avon & Somerset Police. The project will look at the procedures in place across Europe and also speak to police and suspects to understand their experiences of the process.

The project's findings will then be used to establish practice-oriented training materials.
