New Shakespeare Summer School launched as celebrations begin for his 446th birthday

As celebrations take place this weekend to mark the 446th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, the University of Warwick is offering people the chance to sign up for a summer school course to find out more about the Bard.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Warwick will be running a five-day summer school in August looking at the early life of the playwright, his work and the evolution of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

‘Shakespeare: and the company he keeps’ will run from Monday 2 until Friday 6 August at Arden House on the University’s Westwood campus. The course will combine lectures, tutor-led informal discussions and a visit to see a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

This is just one of a number of Open Studies Summer Schools taking place in July, August and September. Subjects include Archaeological Excavation for Beginners, Painting and Patronage in Renaissance Venice, Creative Writing and Writing for Web and Print.

Dr David Lamburn, Director of Academic Studies at the Centre for Lifelong Learning said: “Following on from last year’s pilot programme, we have devised ten Summer Schools which we hope people will find appealing.

“There is a wide range of subjects on offer which will be taught with the professionalism and quality you would expect from the University of Warwick. We hope the programme will offer a stimulating opportunity to extend people’s interests or to develop new ones.”
