Nine day festival brings social sciences to the fore at Warwick

The University of Warwick is offering a fascinating insight into research carried out by the Faculty of Social Sciences, at a nine-day festival next month.

A series of exciting events will take place between Wednesday 6 and Friday 15 May, delving into the study of society and the way people behave and influence the world around us.

The Festival of Social Sciences forms part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations and is packed with innovative workshops, discussion groups and events both on and off campus.

Visitors will see subjects come alive through entertainment, keynote speeches, discussions, competitions and expert speakers, as Warwick’s leading academics host sessions on topics ranging from law and economics, to education and sociology.

There is also an emphasis on inspiring youngsters, with children from primary and secondary schools across Coventry and Warwickshire invited to special lectures about politics.

Christopher Hughes, Chair of the Faculty of Social Sciences, said: “This festival is about demonstrating the importance of social sciences research at Warwick and how the work we do influences all of our lives by helping to inform government policy across a range of areas.

“Whatever the subject being discussed– whether it’s about the future of work, food charity, the state of education, global political economy, Big Data, or analysing UK political behaviour, which all feature in the event programme – they are issues that affect everyone in some way.

“What we want is for people from all walks of life to come along, get involved and truly understand the value of the innovative projects that are underway here in the Faculty of Social Sciences.”

One of the headline events at FarGo Village on Saturday 9 May is set to explore whether Coventry is a sustainable city. Speakers will present their research and visitors will get the chance to talk to organisations from across the area.
