Optical wireless research grant success for Anglo-Australian partnership
One of the first major research grants to arise from the University of Warwick and Monash University partnership has been awarded to an Anglo-Australian project looking at transmitting data through light.
The Monash Warwick Alliance was formalised early in 2012, establishing both partners as globally-connected institutions and building on a number of years of strong and productive relationships between two universities.
A collaboration between Monash University’s Professor Jean Armstrong and the University of Warwick’s Professor Roger Green has been awarded a $410,000 (£267,000) Discovery Grant by the Australian Research Council (ARC).
The project initially benefited from Monash Warwick seed funding in November 2011, which enabled the two academics to visit each other and lay the foundations of their research collaboration.
The ARC grant has been awarded to fund research into optical wireless - where data signals travel through light – a technology which offers benefits over more mainstream data transfer technologies.
The project aims to develop new short-range communications systems with virtually unlimited bandwidth and which combine the speed of optical communications with the convenience of wireless.
Applications range from rapid data download to portable devices such as smart phones, communications within very high-speed computers or within cars or aeroplanes.
Professor Roger Green said: “It’s really great news that the original Warwick-Monash seed funding, which allowed us to do the legwork to set up our collaboration, has blossomed into this funded project.
“I look forward to working with our partners at Monash University on this exciting technology which offers such strong commercial potential.”
