Germany's  Ambassador to the UK, Thomas Matussek,  has kindly agreed to help mark a triple celebration for the University of Warwick's German studies department. He will visit the University on Tuesday 10^th May to meet University of Warwick German department staff and students and celebrate  three successes  for the department:-

• To celebrate their 35th anniversary the German Department are launching a Fund for Excellence - the Godfrey Carr Excellence Fund for German - which will support student bursaries in German studies at Warwick, as well as investment in audio-visual and electronic resources.

• Aldi, the international supermarket chain has just agreed to launch the Godfrey Carr fund with a donation of £1500  to the department. Andy Gillies, Logistics Director and Jonathan Neale, Area Manager (and a Warwick University Graduate) will be attending both the Ambassador's Lecture and the evening reception during his visit.

• The ambassador will meet Oliver Hopwood (a second-year student of French and German Studies) who has won first prize in a national essay competition sponsored by German Academic Exchange Service and the German Embassy, and judged by an Anglo-German panel led by BBC reporter Brian Hanrahan. The competition was open to any undergraduate studying at a UK university. Olly has been awarded a month's placement in Berlin with the German radio station, Deutsche Welle, as well as a week's work experience this summer with BBC World in London.

The ambassador will deliver a special lecture and meet several staff and students throughout the day but the best press opportunity will be in the University’s Learning Grid at 2.10pm details follow:

Press and photo opportunity – there will be a short opportunity to meet the Ambassador at 2.10pm on Tuesday 10^th May as he tours the University's Learning Grid in University House and meets Warwick students including award-winning University of Warwick German student  Olly Hopwood (Olly is from Stockport) and  Victoria McNaney (from Coventry).
