Professor Laura Green appointed to BBSRC Council

Professor Laura Green OBE, Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) at the University of Warwick, has been appointed to the Council of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

The Council was confirmed by the board of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and members will take up their posts following the establishment of UKRI on 01 April 2018.

Professor Laura Green commented:

Professor Green has served on several national research strategy panels targeted at improving health, welfare and sustainability of farming and food security. She served on the Farm Animal Welfare Committee for five years, advising government on welfare of farm animals.

In 2013 she received the Royal Agricultural Society of England’s research medal for reducing the level of footrot in sheep. In 2017 she was shortlisted for BBSRC innovator of the year for impact in reducing the level of lameness in sheep.

In June 2017, Professor Green was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s list for her services to the health and welfare of farmed livestock.

The Councils will be responsible for advising and making decisions, as delegated to it by the UK Research and Innovation Board, on scientific, research and innovation matters. These responsibilities will include:

  • The leadership of their discipline area or fields of activity, including the prioritisation of budgets within their delegated remits and the development of delivery plans;
  • Ensuring the future of skilled specialists, researchers, scientists and others essential to the sustainability of the UK’s research and innovation capacity;
  • Engaging with their community to develop ideas, raise awareness and disseminate strategic outputs;
  • Encouraging and facilitating collaborative work across the nine UKRI Councils to foster strategic relationships.
