Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya receives an Honorary Membership Award from Society of Manufacturing Engineers

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has awarded Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya an Honorary Membership Award. This award is one of the most prestigious honours presented by the society and is reserved for those exhibiting professional eminence among manufacturing engineers.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya was recognised for his ability and stature, plus contribution of his substantial skills and talent to accomplish the goals of society. He is the only person from outside of the USA to receive the award in the last ten years.

There have been a total of 63 awards granted in the last 77 years from 1935 – 2011 and Professor Lord Bhattacharyya joins a list of distinguished recipients including Henry Ford II; Edward N. Cole, President and CEO of General Motors; Harry J. Gray who lead the transformation of United Aircraft into United Technologies; Tsunezo Makino, the founder of Makino Milling Machine and Willard F. Rockwell Jr, founder of Rockwell Automation.

 
On receiving his award Professor Lord Bhattacharyya said: “I am honoured to have received this award, especially as this is usually awarded to an American; I can now say I am one of the handful of non Americans to have been given this honorary membership”.

Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya founded WMG in 1980 in order to reinvigorate UK manufacturing, the Group started small: just an office, the Professor and his secretary. Today there are over 450 staff working across four buildings at Warwick, with education centres in six countries and an annual programme of over £120m. The Group works with both global companies and regional SMEs to improve their competitiveness through the application of value-adding innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigour to industrial and organisational practice. The research capabilities span three themes: digital technologies; materials & manufacturing and operations & business management.
