Public get behind the scenes look at kidney research

Researchers at the University of Warwick are opening the doors of their laboratories to the public for the first time for a behind the scenes look at kidney research. Warwick Medical School’s Clinical Sciences Research Institute is holding a public awareness day on Saturday 27 October.

The Institute, based at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire site, will welcome public, patients and staff from 11am until 3pm. Visitors will be given an insight into ongoing renal research at the hospital and Warwick Medical School. There will also be an opportunity to tour the laboratories, look down the microscopes and talk to the researchers.

Over 3 million people face chronic kidney disease in the UK today; and this number is expected to rise over the next ten years. Meanwhile, an estimated 13,000 people are killed by the disease annually in this country. Warwick Medical School is carrying out research into chronic kidney disease and related areas such as cardiovascular, bone and transplantation.

One of the public awareness days key organisers is Associate Clinical Professor Dr Daniel Zehnder. He said it was important for the public to see for themselves the work taking place. He said: "This day is all about opening the doors and explaining what we are doing. We will be showing the clinical side of kidney research, which deals with studies and transplants, but we will also be showing how our work affects patient care.

"We want to raise awareness of kidney disease and research and illustrate how our work translates into treatments, taking it from the benchside to the bedside."
