Two graduations and a wedding make it a family event for Malaysian sisters

Two sisters from Malaysia will ensure that it’s a double celebration as they both set to graduate on the same day from the University of Warwick (Tuesday 19 July) and celebrate a wedding in the same week.

Family members are flying in from Malaysia to see Sze Vone Chin receive her PhD in Engineering and her younger sister Sze Mun Chin awarded her BEng degree in Engineering.

Sze Vone explained: “There is definitely a strong engineering link in my family and I put that down to being around my father’s factory when I was young, watching all the machinery and being fascinated by how it all worked.

“What’s even more uncanny is that the village I’m from is called Butterworth, near Penang and my sister and I will receive our degrees in the prestigious ‘Butterworth Hall’.”

However, the excitement doesn’t stop there as Sze Vone is also getting married just a few days later on Sunday 24 July in Warwick. Sze Vone and her future husband, Thomas Tam, who studied Physics at Warwick and is currently studying for his PhD, met at the University’s Aikido club, where they have both spent time as president of the club.

She added: “It will certainly be a busy and emotional week for the whole family but one we are all looking forward to. Warwick has become my second home – it’s where I did my degree, Masters and PhD and where I met my future husband. It’s also where my sister met her boyfriend, Wye Loon Cha, who graduated in Engineering last year, so the University of Warwick really is a very special place for the whole family.”
