University launches £3 million scheme to help local builders

The University of Warwick has launched a new scheme to make a significant part of its building work more easily accessible to local building firms.

The University has been mindful that many of the multi  million pound building works on the University campus require complicated tender processes layered with UK and European legal requirements which could deter small local building companies from tendering for the work. However in these difficult economic times the University is particularly concerned to ensure that local Midlands businesses do not feel unable to access work on the campus.

The University has therefore found a way of allocating a total of £3 million worth of planned construction work into smaller individual projects that allow the University to operate a much simpler tender process reducing a typical tender document from 60 pages to just 6.

The work will be divided in packages that fall within two value bands up to £50,000 and up to £100,000. The University will effectively create a roster of companies who are able to bid for these packages of work. The University will be holding a free special open evening, hosted by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Thrift to explain this opportunity to interested in companies in the Atrium of University House on Wednesday 8th April 2009 at 5pm. Interested companies wishing to attend should contact a-m.o.cooper@warwick.ac.uk or 024 76 150911

Professor Nigel Thrift said:

“We have already brought forward construction work on two of our buildings to assist the construction industry in these difficult economic times. I am delighted that we have now also found this way to make access easier to some of our construction work for smaller local building companies.”
