University of Warwick’s free Celebrating Dickens Mobile App reaches 10,000 downloads
A Mobile App commemorating the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth has reached the 10,000 downloads mark.
The University of Warwick’s free Celebrating Dickens Mobile App, available on the iPhone App Store and Android Market, was released on the great author’s birthday on February 7, offering an academic insight into the novels, life and times of Charles Dickens – the first of its kind.
Led by Charles Dickens expert Professor Jon Mee, from the University of Warwick’s English and Comparative Literary Studies Department, the App offers a plethora of podcasts, articles and videos exploring aspects of Victorian Britain, Charles Dickens’ novels and adaptations of his works.
Award-winning screenplay writer Andrew Davies, who adapted both Bleak House and Little Dorrit for the BBC, also contributes with an exclusive insight into how one goes about transferring Dickens’ illustrative text into compelling television.
Professor Mee said: “It is fantastic that the Celebrating Dickens has proven to be such a success, and just goes to show the enduring appeal and longevity of the man himself and his novels.
“Charles Dickens is one of the most famous authors to have ever put pen to paper and is one of a rare breed whose words and characters are known by millions people who have never before opened up one of his novels.”
Updates of the Celebrating Dickens Mobile App are planned throughout the year.
