University of Warwick chemist honoured with prestigious award by the Royal Society

Professor David Haddleton, from the University of Warwick’s Chemistry Department has recently been awarded a top science accolade – for being a ‘respected scientist of outstanding achievement or potential.’

The chemistry researcher was recently named as one of seven scientists in the UK to be granted a Wolfson Research Merit Award by the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science.

Professor Haddleton will be working on a project called ‘Controlled polymerisation to new materials: Polymer therapeutics to oil recovery’ – which will see him further new methods for polymer synthesis with far reaching applications in therapeutic delivery, oil recovery and personal care products.

Professor Mike Shipman, Head of Warwick’s Chemistry Department, said: “We are delighted that David’s work as a chemist has been recognised with this prestigious award.

“The work that he can now carry out will not only benefit the University but the wider business community as well.”

Jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the scheme aims to provide universities with additional support to attract or retain respected scientists of outstanding achievement or potential.

Professor Haddleton’s work is strongly aligned with UK and global industry working on specific practical applications. This fits alongside the University of Warwick’s involvement in Science City Research Alliance which has provided major regional infrastructure investment with the aim of attracting high added value technology to the region.

The Wolfson Foundation is a grant-making charity established in 1955. Funding is given to support excellence. More information is available from www.wolfson.org.uk

The Science City Research Alliance, funded by Advantage West Midlands via Birmingham Science City and the European Regional Development Fund unites the University of Warwick and the University of Birmingham in a strategic research partnership.
