A new journal showing the latest research into patient involvement and engagement in health and social care is being launched next year by a Warwick academic and a patient.

Dr Sophie Staniszewska from the Royal College of Nursing Research Institute at Warwick Medical School will be one of two editors-in-chief for the Research Involvement and Engagement (RIE) journal. Her fellow editor-in-chief will be patient Richard Stephens.

Mr Stephens chairs the UK National Cancer Research Institute’s consumer liaison group and is a member of the English National Evaluation of Trials and Studies Co-ordinating Centre’s patient and public involvement steering group. He has survived two cancers, a heart emergency and other health challenges.

The journal will be published be BioMed Central and it will be produced collaboratively by patients, carers, academics and policy-makers.

In a joint statement, co-editors Dr Staniszewska and Mr Stephens said, “Research Involvement and Engagement aims to develop the evidence base underpinning patient and public

involvement and engagement in health research. Our joint editorship signals our intention to work towards the coproduction of knowledge that informs healthcare practice.”

Director of the Royal College of Nursing Research Institute, Professor Kate Seers, said “This is an important innovative new journal, which really commits to developing a joint understanding of patient and public involvement and engagement. I think it will provide impetus for developments in the field and I can’t wait for the first issue!

Deputy Dean of Warwick Medical School, Professor Sudhesh Kumar said he was delighted the School was involved in the new journal.

He said: “This is an important new publication dealing with the vital area of patient involvement and engagement. I am sure it will be a great success.”
