The University of Warwick has announced the names of three people who will receive Honorary Degrees from the University during its winter degree ceremonies this on 23rd and 24th January. Professor Donald Berwick Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) 24th of January

Although based in the US Professor Donald Berwick has had a very profound influence on healthcare improvement in the United Kingdom, and is indeed one of the most respected advisers on healthcare in this country. His contribution was recognised by his appointment in 2005 as an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Professor Berwick is President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a not-for-profit organization helping to accelerate the improvement of health care throughout the world, and is a Professor of paediatrics and health care policy at the Harvard Medical School and Professor of health policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health. He has published over 110 scientific articles in numerous professional journals on subjects relating to health care policy, decision analysis, technology assessment, and health care quality management.

The work that Dr Berwick has pioneered at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement in Harvard has been transferred to the NHS by his many links to the NHS Modernisation Agency.

Lord Sainsbury of Turville Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) 23rd of January

David Sainsbury became Lord Sainsbury of Turville in October 1997. He was Chairman of J Sainsbury plc until July 1998. Finance Director of J Sainsbury plc from 1973 to 1990 and Deputy Chairman from 1988 to 1992.

Lord Sainsbury was first appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Science and Innovation in July 1998, with responsibility for the Office of Science and Technology, Research Councils and space matters. He served in that role until November 2006. He received the Award for Distinguished Leadership in Business from Columbia Business School in 1990. He was a member of the Committee of Review of the Post Office (Carter Committee) from 1975 to 1977; a member of the Dockland Joint Committee from 1978 to 1981; and a member of the IPPR Commission on Public Policy and British Business from 1995 to 1997.

Camila Batmanghelidjh – Honorary Master of Arts (Hon MA) 23rd of January

A Warwick graduate, Camila Batmanghelidjh is a psychotherapist and founder and leader of Kids Company – a London-based charity that provides emotional, practical and educational support for deprived and disturbed children. She also founded The Place to Be, offering psychotherapy and counselling to children in schools. It is now a national project and serves in excess of 20,000 children a year.

She won the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2005, and was awarded the Woman of the Year award for 2006 in recognition of her work with Kids Company. She has written Shattered Lives: Children Who Live with Courage and Dignity.
