Warwick gains award for work on gender equality

Athena SWANThe University of Warwick has become the fourth institution to be given the Silver award in the latest round of Athena SWAN Charter awards.

There was also success for both the Mathematics Institute and the Department of Statistics who were given Bronze status.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology in higher education and research. Warwick was the only university to receive the Institutional Silver award in this round.

Professor Alison Rodger, Chair of the Athena SWAN Network Group at Warwick, said “The University's Athena SWAN silver award is a great recognition of the progress we have made in supporting our female academics in their careers. A number of people have put in a lot of effort to get us to this place.

“However, we are the first to acknowledge that it is a journey and we have no intention of resting on our laurels. Looking forward, we plan to use our Athena SWAN action plans to make Warwick a better place for all of our staff, both male and female.”

The departments of Chemistry, Physics and Warwick Medical School already hold Silver awards, and the departments of Engineering, Psychology and the School of Life Sciences hold Bronze awards.

The submission round for April 2013 was the biggest ever for Athena SWAN, with 112 award submissions and 17 panels. The award will be presented in a ceremony at Imperial College London later in November.
