WMG Academy awarded £10.5 million to start building work
The WMG Academy for Young Engineers has been awarded £10.5 million to start work on its new building in Coventry.
The Academy is a new school for pupils aged 14-19 who have a passion for engineering, and is planned to open on a site adjacent to Westwood Academy in September 2014. A taster event for prospective pupils will take place on Saturday 29 June, 2013.
One of the most recently approved University Technical Colleges, the Academy is a new concept in education. It offers a problem-solving, practical approach to learning, approaching key subject areas via their application to real-world problems.
The approval of the funding, through the Education Funding Agency, is a key milestone in the development of the new school.
Director of the WMG Academy for Young Engineers, Richard Hutchins said this was an important milestone for the project.
He said: “We have been working very closely with the Education Funding Agency and the Department for Education on the Feasibility Study to develop the WMG Academy for Young Engineers. We are thrilled that we can now move to the next stage and start working with our developers and architect to design a brand new building in which students, teaching staff and employers can work together to produce the next generation of highly skilled engineers of the future.”
