Since 1960, approximately US $4 trillion has been distributed in development aid. Yet, in 2010, 2.4 billion people had to survive on US$2 or less per day, which was only slightly down from 2.59 billion people in 1981. An estimated 10% of the world’s population lacks access to water and 35% lack access to sanitation although the technology is simple and easy to install.

Scholars at Warwick carry out cross-disciplinary research on a range of research on urgent and important questions of international development.

Our research is organised under four primary research themes: Gender, Health, Rights & Social Justice, Creative Economies and Private Sector Enterprise. This however does not constrain our research work – the GRP supports research in many different fields including access to water, food security and education and geographically specific work such as the Another India research group.

Our research events are organised around an Annual theme – this year it is democracy and development (for previous annual themes and events see here). An annual theme allows us to focus on cross-linkages across disciplines and departments on one research area. The Warwick International Development Annual Lecture is also focused on the annual theme.

We collaborate with colleagues across the university and those from other universities to bid for research grants in order to further international development research.
