Professor Seán Hand

MA DPhil (Oxon), MBA DLitt (Warwick), SFHEA, FRSA, FCIL, Chevalier des Palmes Académiques, Academia Europaea

Seán Hand’s academic research, which has been funded by the Leverhulme Trust, HEFCE, the AHRC, and the British Academy, examines radical writings of the past 100 years, and includes monographs on the French autobiographer Michel Leiris and the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. He also chairs Warwick University’s Art Collection Committee.

As a linguist, internationalist and supporter of the visibility and significance of the artwork, he particularly endorses the Commission’s aim to understand and appreciate the multiplicity of cultural influences and expressions that structure and inform contemporary identities.

He also believes that the question of cultural value involves more than the isolation and praise of cultural productions by social or economic interests. It involves a first question about how social and economic landscapes are themselves sustained or changed by cultural values. This means that the arts and their related policies have value both in themselves and in their forms of soft leadership.
