Principal aims

This module aims to develop and extend students’ understanding of key theoretical approaches to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) with a particular focus on instructional contexts; learner characteristics and psychological processes affecting language learning; theories of learning underpinning instructional practices; the classroom as a social environment. The module will use this theoretical knowledge base to analyse and critically evaluate current professional practice in second language learning and teaching contexts, and foster students’ skills in enabling their learners to learn efficiently and effectively. Students will be able to explore in depth an issue within the area of second language learning with particular relevance to their own professional context.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to specify key theories of second language acquisition and know how they relate to particular instructional practices; have clear insights into the complexity of cognitive and affective variables implicated in second language learning; have a comprehensive understanding of developmental processes and learner characteristics affecting language learning at different life stages; show critical awareness of the social dynamics of a classroom and their implications for the teaching–learning process; show critical awareness of the complex role of classroom talk in mediating language learning; evaluate classroom issues and practices in their own professional and cultural contexts in light of current theories of teaching–learning.
