Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module explores the institutions, rules and underlying policy issues of the international trading system with particular reference to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Principal learning outcomes

"The module has the following learning outcomes: To know the main features of the WTO as an international organisation. To know the main WTO Agreements and to understand and evaluate a wide range of technical legal issues of the international trading system; To understand the relationship between national regulation and international trade rules and to assess the impact of the WTO at the national level; To assess the role of the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanisms; To be able to read and understand WTO Agreements and case law; To understand the relationship between the WTO agreements and bilateral and regional trade agreements; To assess how the WTO’s rules and regulations impact upon a number of other policy areas (e.g. the protection of the environment, human rights, development etc.)"
