Module content and teaching
The aim of this option is to explore social structures, changes, and problems in early modern England Context: The option builds on the general knowledge of early modern Europe that is acquired through the second-year core module and/or another early modern option. It also lays down a solid foundation for those wishing to take a 3 rd year special subject or advanced option on early modern English social, cultural or political history, and for the MA in Religious and Social History (or similar modules elsewhere).
Principal learning outcomes
Expected Learning Outcomes: a) The further development of study, writing and communication skills; b) An understanding of the main social issues covered by the module; The Social History of England, 1500-1700 (2010-11); c) An opportunity to develop critical analytical skills through the assessment of historical approaches which may be radically different and sometimes mutually exclusive; d) An opportunity, through the long essay, to study a particular aspect of the module in greater depth, or from a different perspective, and so to acquire skills in handling primary source material, often in an unfamiliar form, or to develop skills in evaluating different and competing historiographical approaches; e) A greater awareness of the interaction between social and other branches of history, and of the multiple character of causes and effects.
Timetabled teaching activities
The module will be taught through weekly lectures, fortnightly 1.5 hour seminars (each with 8 students), and individual meetings to discuss feedback on your short essays.
