Module content and teaching
Principal aims
To provide students with the basic assessment and management skills required for dealing with trauma emergencies in the pre-hospital setting and provide a preliminary grounding in the principle of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
Principal learning outcomes
Understand the priorities in resuscitating a trauma patient; Understand the particular challenges of work in the pre-hospital environment; Able to work in team of carers to treat the accident victim; Able to apply principles and skills required to treat immediately life threatening conditions before arrival at hospital; To ensure personal safety at the scene of any incident; To be able to undertake the initial stages of resuscitation of a trauma patient and have the appropriate associated skills. required in the pre-hospital setting; To ensure effective communication skills between care providers applicable to a pre-hospital environment; To understand the role and responsibilities of other care providers (e.g. the ambulance service and emergency services)
