Dworski, Adam

Adam (Adaš) Dworski, 1917 - 2011.

Dworski was born in Rijeka, Jugoslavia (now in Croatia). In 1949 he met an English woman whom he married in 1954 leaving Jugoslavia to settle in Wales where, despite having formerly been a lawyer, he started the Wye Pottery in Clyro, Radnorshire (now Powys).

Much of his work was decorative and sculptural, representing buildings, figures from classical literature or animals, though stoneware plaques and domestic wares were also produced. The richly coloured glazes he used on some of his pieces have invited comparisons with stained glass art.

His work became popular and is found in many public and private collections; two pieces by Dworski were among the art works selected for the new Coventry Cathedral, consecrated in 1962, and Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King, has a Black Madonna made by him.
