Portrait 3 by Allen Jones

Many of Jones'sculptures, prints and paintings included images of semi-naked women, often in sexually provocative poses. Jones' reworking of imagery almost 20 years old, came at a time when the women's movement was arguing that the use of women as sex objects in advertising contributed to male oppression of women.

The presentation of women as sex objects in Jones' art has been regarded by some critics as a supportive commentary on the debate around the objectification of women. However, writing in 1979 in Block, Lisa Tickner argues that "the exploitation of already exploitative material cannot be seen as politically neutral, whatever the artist's intentions and the use of a particular kind of sexual imagery contributes to the 'objectification', even degradation of women."
