Art and Language

Art and Language, a Coventry based group, was formed in 1966 to give 'some formal identity and practical substance to a discourse which had been more or less accidentally developed'. The group published its first volume of Art-Language in May 1969. This publication was representative of their practice which was concerned with concepts rather than the production of the art object. They questioned the notion of the 'art object' asserting that if a bottlerack can become one so then could the shop where it was purchased, the town in which the shop was situated, the country and the universe. These questions were explored visually in a series of maps.
