Bernard Cohen

Born 1933, London

Bernard Cohen, brother of Harold Cohen, attended first St Martin's School of Art and then from 1951-54 the Slade School of Fine Art.  He won a French Government Scholarship in 1954 and spent a year in Paris where he came under the influence of Dubuffet. From 1959 he taught at Ealing School of Art, then Chelsea School of Art 1966-68, The Slade School of Fine Art 1967-73, also from 1977 and the Royal College of Art 1975-77.  In 1980 he became Head of Painting, Wimbledon School of Art, where he remained until 1987.  In 1988 he became Slade professor and chair of fine art of London University.  In 1969-70 he was Visiting Professor in Fine Art at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He exhibited in both Situation exhibitions, at the RBA in 1960 and the Marlborough New London Gallery in 1961. Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Hayward Gallery, London in 1972 and at the Tate Gallery, London in 1995.

His early works were greatly influenced by American Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock in particular.
