Daniel Sturgis

Born in London, 1966.

Sturgis is a painter, curator and teacher; he studied at London College of Printing (1985-86), Camberwell College of Art (1986-89) and Goldsmith’s College (1992-94). In 2010 he was awarded a PhD by Oxford Brookes University (for a thesis on the use of Baroque in early post-modern thought).

In his paintings Sturgis employs an abstract visual language of repeated motifs, often with oscillating shapes, patterns and colours which demand from the viewer an active process of looking and reflection on possible associations implied in the work. They have been widely exhibited in the UK and Europe since 1984 and in major solo shows in London, Stuttgart, Athens, Amsterdam and New York. He was a prize winner in the John Moores Painting Prize in Liverpool in 2010.

As a curator Sturgis has been involved in a number of exhibitions, including ‘Perfidy’ , marking the 50th anniversary of Le Corbusier’s monastery Le Tourette in 2001; a Jeremy Moon Retrospective at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge in 2000/2001; a reconstruction of Daniel Buren’s ‘Viole/Toile Toile/Voile’ at the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, Cumberland in 2005 and ‘The Indiscipline of Painting’ at Tate St Ives and the Mead Gallery in 2011/2012.
