Location Description:

Eileen Lawrence was born in Leith, Scotland and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1963-1968.

She is inspired by natural forms, such as feathers, shells and twigs, which she recreates with intimate accuracy. Here the images are produced upon richly textured handmade paper.

Her work often takes the form of prayer sticks and scrolls which derive from Buddhist prayer flags and reflect Lawrence's interest in Eastern philosophies. The repetition of images are like phrases of music or visual poetry and have been described as an aid to meditation.
