Friedrich Meckseper

Born 1936

Widely admired among living German artists, the painter and printmaker Friedrich Meckseper initially completed an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer but in 1955 changed direction by enrolling at the State Academy for Visual Arts in Stuttgart, following this with further studies at the Berlin College of Visual Arts.

Print making became an important element in his work and over the years he received many awards including prizes at the 7th Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo in 1970, the 6th Norwegian International Print Biennale in 1982 and at two Kochi Triennial Exhibitions of Prints in Japan in 1990 and 1993.

The essence of his work, his paintings and collages as well as his etchings, has been described as ‘fantastic realism’ and features beautifully detailed combinations of objects - clocks and measuring instruments, for instance - evoking concepts of time and space and, with their sometimes ambiguous titles, always challenging the viewer to speculate about possible meanings.

For four decades Meckseper has been a regular exhibitor at galleries throughout Europe as well as in America and Japan.
