Sutherland trained at Goldsmith's College of Art in London, where he specialised in etching from 1921-6. With the decline in the print market in the 1930s he turned to painting and designing posters, glass, ceramics and textiles. In 1936 he contributed to the International Surrealist Exhibition in London and during the Second World War he was appointed as an official artist. In 1952 he was commissioned to design the Reredos Tapestry for Coventry Cathedral, completed in 1962. In the 1960s and 70s he is best known for his production of suites of prints.
