Hughie O'Donoghue

Born in Manchester in 1953.

Hughie O'Donoghue studied at Goldsmith's College, University of London where he gained an MA in Fine Art (1982). Early in his career he was appointed to two artist-residencies: at the Drax power station near Selby in Yorkshire (1983) and the National Gallery in London (1984-86). His first solo exhibition was held at the AIR Galley in London in 1984. He went on the achieve wide, international acclaim and his work is represented in numerous public collections in the U.K. and abroad.

A painting by O'Donoghue typically depicts a human figure within an abstracted landscape. A major theme in his work has been the investigation of the past, beginning with research into his family's history, particularly his father's experiences in Word War 2. Most of his works refer to personal stories exploring ideas of place and identity; they also make reference to O'Donoghue's deep interest in and understanding of art history, sometimes quoting themes and methods of artists from the past.
