Born in Islington, he studied painting then ceramics at Camberwell School of Art from 1957-62.  He gained a Fellowship to the Royal College of Art in 1967.  Godfrey took up the techniques of modelling and carving in the 1960s, most of which he did using a penknife.  He had two large exhibitions at the British Crafts Centre in the 1970s.
