The 1960's saw a great attempt at levelling the divide between art and everyday life. To do this a new interest in the images and symbols of popular culture and everyday life were used. It was thought that using objects familiar to everyone would be more accessible in a way that the more intimate and personal form of Expressionism was not.

Pop artists experimented with new materials such as metals, foam or plastic. The tube of paint was often abandoned in favour of more modern techniques, such as collages, screen-printing and metalwork. Here Tilson has created two larger than life wrist watches in metal and foam. They look as though they are portraits of everyday life enclosed in a display case. Tilson was fascinated in the production of modern materials and their potential within art.
