Julian Trevelyan

Born 1910, Dorking, Surrey.  Died 1988, London, England.

Julian Trevelyan was the son of the poet RC Trevelyan.  He went to Cambridge University and then studied at SW Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris in the early 1930s.  He became a member of the English Surrealist Group in1936.  He was a camouflage officer in the Royal Engineers during the war and then taught at Chelsea School of Art from 1950-60.  He was the engraving tutor at the Royal College of Art in London from 1955-63.  His autobiography Indigo Days was published in 1957.  He married first the potter Ursula Darwin and second the painter Mary Fedden.

He was made an honorary Senior Royal Academician in 1986.  His work is in the collection of the Tate Gallery and many other public and private collections.
