Laurence Scarfe

Born 1914, Idle, Yorkshire.  Died 1993.

Laurence Scarfe went to Shipley Art School and then studied mural painting at the Royal College of Art in London from 1933-37.  He lectured at Bromley School of Art from 1937-39 and, after the war, lectured at the Central School of Art and Design from 1945-70.  He subsequently taught in the Faculty of Art at Brighton Polytechnic for over ten years.

He produced murals for the Regatta Restaurant and the Dome of Discovery at the Festival of Britain exhibition, 1951, the Coronation Pavilion for Imperial Chemical Industries and for the P&O Orient Lines.

He made illustrations for magazines such as the Radio Times and was art editor for the Saturday Book. His work is in the collections of the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
