Patrick Caulfield

Born 1936, London. Died 2005, London

Patrick Caulfield studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1956–60 and subsequently at the Royal College of Art from 1960–63. He then returned to Chelsea to teach there until 1971. His first solo exhibition was at the Robert Fraser Gallery, London in 1965. Significant group exhibitions include the first New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London in 1964, and 'Pop Art' held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1991. Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, touring to the Tate Gallery, London (1981) and at the Serpentine Gallery, London (1992–93). A major retrospective of his paintings, organised by the British Council, was shown at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1999, and subsequently toured to the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art, Luxembourg, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, and the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut (1999–2000). Caulfield's work is in the collections of national museums and galleries across the world.

Bryan Robertson noted in his introduction to the exhibition catalogue Prints 1964-1981, 'Technically, his silkscreen prints are immaculate. ... Caulfield projects all his painted images through a fastidious balance between pure line and pure colour'.

After his death in 2005, Caulfield's impressive career was celebrated in retrospective exhibitions at Tate Liverpool (2006), The Royal Academy (2006) and Tate Britain (2013).
