Richard Long uses landscape as the material for his work. In the 1960s he began to use walks as a way of communicating ideas about landscape, presenting them as maps, photographs and words. Later works introduced the physical material itself into gallery spaces in the form of carpets of slate and stones or drawings with mud. The words on this paper are located as precisely as the stones in his spirals.

The bare bones of description invite the viewer to imagine the events that led to the changing pace and intervals of the walk.
