Fachada by Roberto Gonzalez-Fernandez

Fachada by Roberto Gonzalez-Fernandez

Golder-Thompson Gift.

This print is from one of a series of works in which Gonzalez-Fernandez focuses on architecture, something which throughout his career, he has repeatedly photographed and drawn during his extensive travels around the world. In particular, he is interested in façades as an expression of a building’s character or personality, but a façade is also something that conceals. Here the male actors who appear in many of his dramatic paintings are either absent or subtly hinted at in a shadow, reflection or, in this example (look closely), a dimly seen presence behind a window. The effect is to imply an event or narrative which reflects the experience of loneliness, isolation or fear, themes which permeate many of the artist’s works.
