Roy Lichtenstein

Born 1923, New York, USA.

Roy Lichtenstein went to study with Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in 1939 and, after wartime service, to Ohio State University. He lived in Cleveland from 1951-57 and painted scenes from the history of the American West. He returned to New York to teach, and painted in an Abstract Expressionist style. However, he became one of the first generation of American Pop Artists. Drawing for his children he had developed, in cartoon images, the stylization of line and colour limitation, which became so characteristic of his comic-book style of work.
