This photograph is one from a series of works called ‘Motherland’. Roberts journeyed across Russia for twelve months between 2004 – 2005, describing through photography what it means to be Russian in the 21st Century. This view is of of the town of Grozny ravaged during the armed conflict between Chechen Separatists and the Russian Federation but what Roberts seeks to show in particular is the resilience of the population in establishing a thriving market against the backcloth of devastation.
