Suzanne Moxhay

Born 1976, Essex

Suzanne Moxhay studied painting at the Chelsea College of Art before doing a post graduate diploma in Fine Art at the Royal Academy Schools.

During her course at the RA Schools she turned to photography as a means of creating dream-like worlds and situations, usually devoid of human presence, which the viewer is challenged to interpret and imagine possible narratives. She constructs these images by digitally combining her own photographs with cuttings from existing photographs in the substantial archive of printed material she has collected. The results strongly reflect the painterly skills she acquired in her initial training, the assured, subtle use of colour and dramatic lighting effects, for instance.

Suzanne Moxhay describes herself an artist working with photography rather than a photographer, she produces a photograph of photographs; her work is an intricate montage of found images, combined with her own photography and sometimes painted elements, often of places with which she is familiar.

She has frequently exhibited, both nationally and internationally since 2002, exhibitions include the Saatchi’s ‘New Sensations/ The Future Can Wait’ show in London 2014, the WW Gallery at the Venice Biennale 2011 and the ‘GSK Contemporary: Earth Art of a Changing World’ at the Royal Academy of Arts 2010.

Her work is represented in many public and private collections including the University of the Arts Collection, The Royal Academy of Arts, The Cooper Union New York and Oxford University.
