Holt by Suzanne Moxhay

Holt by Suzanne Moxhay

Golder-Thompson Gift, dedicated to Rebecca Hicks and Nicola Shane.

Holt is from a series of works based on photographs Moxhay took between 2011 and 2012 called Diorama. She visited the Natural History Museums in London and New York and photographed dioramas - the painted backgrounds for cabinet displays of animal taxidermy, fossils, archaeological objects etc. In this case we have what might be the backcloth for a wild life display (the word holt relates to both a wood and an animal’s lair) but what is shown is a deserted den, littered with rubbish. It evokes a theme Moxhay has featured in several works: a post-apocalyptic world, a grim and eerily unsettling forecast of a future world.
