This painting was bought from The Young Contemporaries exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 1970. This annual show of the work of recent graduates continues today under the title New Contemporaries. We have no further information about Sylvia Scamell and assume that, like many art school graduates, she did not enjoy early success and turned to other occupations.
