Tom Gentleman

Born in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1892.

Tom Gentleman studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1911 to 1914, during this time he served as a volunteer in the Queen’s Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry and at the outbreak of World War 1 was then mobilised for military service until 1918.

Whilst a student at Glasgow School of Art he had been awarded the Haldane Travelling Scholarship and was able to take this up in 1920 enabling him to develop his artistic skills visiting Corsica, Italy, France and Spain.

On his return to Glasgow he established himself as a painter, printmaker and graphic artist, also teaching art for a while at Coatbridge Technical School. In 1928 he moved to London where he worked for several advertising agencies as well as in the design studio of Shell Mex, returning there after the 1939-1945 war as its Studio Manager. During the war years he was employed by the Ministry of Information. In 1952 he retired but continued to draw and paint until his death in 1966.

In 1947 he was elected Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists.
