In the 1930s Pasmore co-founded a group of artists known as the Euston Road School who attempted to translate accurately the real world close up on the 2D canvas through observation. In 1948 he turned to pure abstraction, in an attempt to create art no longer dependent on nature but on a disciplined visual language based on the circle, square and spiral. His Point of Contact series does, however, make reference to nature, as it is based on rock formations he studied at St.Ives.
