Media Training

The University of Warwick's innovative Media Training program is uniquely tailored for academics.

Led by Communications Manager, Tania Corbett, who has 30 years of Media Training experience, along with Press Officer, Bron Mills, a former BBC and ITV broadcast journalist; this initiative is currently in its pilot phase, designed to better understand the specific needs of our academic community.

In today's dynamic academic environment, effective communication is paramount.

Our press team is dedicated to equipping academics with the skills necessary to engage with the media and convey their research effectively.

Participants will gain valuable insights into crafting compelling narratives, conducting impactful interviews, and building a confident media presence as we strive to facilitate a stronger connection between academia and the public sphere.

The University of Warwick's Media Training program offers you the opportunity to unlock your potential and ensure your research resonates with a broader audience.

Course details:

The training course consists of three elements:

- An online Moodle course outlining identifying media opportunities; different media channels and styles; and how the media works. You will also have a short introduction to basic interview preparation and techniques.

- A face-to-face session, with a short discussion on the online training, followed by three practice interview sessions.

1. Elevator Pitch - An elevator pitch is a brief (30 seconds) way of introducing yourself, and getting across a key point or two.

2. Local style interview - Embracing the interview approach of local or regional journalists with no 'specialist area' you will be expected to target your answers to a broad audience, with emphasis on explaining concepts in laymen's terms.

3. National style interview - The interviewer in this case is likely to be more informed on the topic in question, as is the audience, as well as having a more punchy approach.
